CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY
WEST LOOP / CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Once the home to Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios, this one time television production space in Chicago’s West Loop now houses the Chicago Public Library’s newest branch. Riding on the success of previous collaborations, Bader Art Metal partnered with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP to bring unparalleled detail to the space with architectural and ornamental metalwork. Throughout the space, blackened steel metal details balance the vibrant interior finishes reflecting the West Loop’s factory-warehouse style. Formed from two existing conjoined buildings, steel-cladded openings with tubular steel balustrades were created to unify the interior spaces. As visitors move throughout the library, they’re greeted by laser cut signage and steel paneled walls with integrated screens for wayfinding. Descending the brake formed steel staircase arriving at the circulation desk with folded steel service ledge, they’re ready to check out.
